The landscaper who is invisible until spring

A landscaping business that is flat out from May to September and quiet the rest of the year. Every spring the owner thinks about marketing, and every spring they are too busy to do anything about it by the time it would have worked.

This is an illustrative walkthrough, not a customer. Nobody named, nothing measured, no outcome claimed — it is here so you can follow a situation like your own and see how we would think about it.

What it looks like from inside

  • Work arrives in a rush and then stops
  • Searching the trade plus the town returns competitors first
  • The Google Business Profile exists but has not been touched in two years
  • Nothing has been published on the site since it was built
  • Quotes go out in April for work that was decided on in February

The actual problem

Seasonal businesses market in their busy season because that is when they remember to. But search visibility takes months to build, so the effort lands after the decisions have been made. The work needs doing in the quiet months, which is exactly when it feels least urgent.

How we would approach it

  1. Fix what the profile says before anything elseA complete, correct Google Business Profile with the right categories, real photos and current service areas. This is the cheapest visibility available to a local trade and it is almost always half-finished.
  2. Give the service areas somewhere to livePages for the places the business actually serves, with content specific to each. A single page listing fifteen towns tells search engines very little; a page about the work done in one of them tells it something.
  3. Publish against the decision, not the seasonPeople plan landscaping months before they commission it. Content that answers the questions asked during planning has time to rank before the enquiry happens.
  4. Give the off-season a reason to make contactSomething worth an email address during planning — a checklist, a guide to what a quote should include — so the quiet months build a list rather than passing silently.

What changes

  • Search visibility is being built during the months when there is time to build it
  • The business appears for the places it actually works, not just the town it is registered in
  • Planning-stage questions get answered by the business rather than by a competitor
  • The quiet season produces contacts instead of nothing

Search visibility takes months and cannot be promised. What can be promised is that the technical work gets done properly, that it is measured, and that you are told honestly whether it is working.

Questions people actually ask

How long before this shows up in search?

For a local trade with an existing profile, usually a few months for local results, longer for competitive terms. Anyone quoting you a specific position by a specific date is guessing or worse.

Is a page for every town just spam?

It is if the pages are the same text with the place name swapped — search engines have handled that for years. It is not if each page is genuinely about the work done there. The difference is whether a human would find it useful.

We are too busy in summer to publish anything.

That is the point. The work belongs in the off-season, which is also when publishing feels least urgent. Writing four pieces in January beats intending to write twelve in June.
